Tourists and Travellers

Travelling is easy and comparatively cheap today. Through modern means of transport the world has shrunk. Travel has become popular among all classes of the population, even those who are not so well-to-do can afford nowadays to go on charter flights and take part in package tours or package holidays.

Package Holiday: Package holidays are organised by a tour operator and sold by a travel agent. A package holiday consist of transport and accommodation advertised and sold together. Other services may be provided such as a rental car, activities or excursions during the holiday. The biggest advantage of package holidays is that it is cost saving. Another positive aspect is that you don't have to take care of booking flight tickets, checking out accomodation availability and so on. Package holidays are also a safe way of travelling because companies that offer tour packages are aware of situations in particular places, the risks and the safe zones.

As being someone to take part in travelling, we can distinguish between tourists and travellers.

The difference between a tourist and a traveller is not determined by cost, age, style or destination. It is based entirely on outlook and attitude.

Travellers live every moment of their trip. They are appreciative of every meter of new ground that they are exploring and of everything around them. They notice the struggles or joys of life for the inhabitants, they keep a low profile, they attempt to be polite, culturally sensitive and attempt at least a few words of the local language.

A tourist simply substitutes the comforts of home for the comforts of a hotel. They don't stray (herumstreunen) from the estate or travel only within the secure confines (sicheren Rahmen) of a well-managed group. They stick only to the food they know. They take no interest in their surroundings and attempt no interaction with the local people. When it is all over, they can barely differentiate between this year's vacation and last year's.

Being a traveller does not mean sacrificing comfort, taking risks or forging ahead alone. It is simply a genuine (aufrichtig) appreciation of one's surroundings regardless of where those surroundings might be.
